The House of Gosset
I was privileged to visit the House of Gosset Champagne in Epernay with a colleague in October 2017. Gosset was originally established in Ay and is still privately owned.
Their claim to fame is that they are the oldest wine house in the Champagne region. They have been here since 1584 producing top quality champagnes from premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes in grand and premier cru vineyards around Ay and Epernay. Their growers follow strict environmentally sustainable practices in the vineyards.
Since 2009 Gosset has been based at a fine 19th century house in Epernay with a spacious modern winery and deep cellars whilst retaining their historic Ay cellars.
Being one of the smaller houses, the style of Gosset champagnes takes on more of a handcrafted approach. Gosset has generous, full bodied fruit and natural complex flavours derived from avoiding malolactic fermentation in the winery, allowing the wines to keep their natural fruitiness and yet retain soft acidity and to age gracefully. The new generation of winemaking adopts a minimum interventional philosophy yet retaining the traditional house style of over 400 years ago.
Gosset champagnes were the favourite at the court of Francis I and Henry IV of France which are now enjoyed today displaying an elegance and style that accompanies food matching and fine dining. Gosset champagne is perfect for any celebrations, as an aperitif or purely enjoying a glass or two!
